An Inferiority Complex

Romans 12:3: For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.

Proverbs 25:27b: . . . so for men to search their own glory is not glory.

Ecclesiastes 7:16: Be not righteous over much; neither make thyself over wise: why shouldest thou destroy thyself?

It is appropriate and helpful for us to have an inferiority complex. Having an inferiority complex can lead to humility. When we compare ourselves with God we are vastly inferior. When we consider what we need to be to get to heaven we fail miserably.

Romans 3:23: For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

It can be miserable to feel inferior. Feeling superior or at least adequate is more comfortable. If feeling inferior helps us to find our sufficiency in the Lord it is a blessing.

2 Corinthians 3:5: Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God;

Honestly and accurately comparing ourselves to God is helpful because it can be a step toward humility. Comparing ourselves to other men is unhelpful. Even if we come in ahead of some of them we fall worlds short of God and His standards.

2 Corinthians 10:12: For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.

Philippians 2:3: Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.

I have known many individuals who had inflated opinions of themselves. None ever become Christians until they become humble before God. Sometimes they accuse Christians of arrogance. They mistake our confidence in the Lord for confidence in ourselves.

James 4:6: But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.

Proverbs 16:18: Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.

Jeremiah 50:32: And the most proud shall stumble and fall, and none shall raise him up: and I will kindle a fire in his cities, and it shall devour all round about him.

Even genuine Christians can be proud. What they should be proud of is the Lord.

1 Corinthians 10:12: Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.

2 Corinthians 10:17: But he that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.

I am thankful that I was very insecure as a young person. I am thankful that I failed to meet my own expectations. It helped me to appreciate the security that is only in the Lord.

Jeremiah 9:24: But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the LORD.

Matthew 5:3: Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Psalms 34:18: The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.

Do you feel inferior? Good for you!!
